Championing Inclusivity in Schools: The Importance of Support Staff

In today's educational landscape, fostering inclusivity is paramount. A comprehensive team of educational professionals; including teachers, subject specialists, Special Educational Needs Coordinators (SENCOs), teaching assistants and learning support assistants; plays a crucial role in creating an environment where every student can thrive.

The growing need for one-to-one support

Recent years have seen a significant increase in the number of students requiring individualised support. According to Government Statistics, in England the percentage of pupils with an Education, Health and Care (EHC) plan rose to 4.8% in 2024, continuing an upward trend since 2016. Notably, the number of pupils with an EHC plan increased by 11.6% between 2023 and 2024, reaching 434,000, a total increase of 83.4% since 2016.

Additionally, The Guardian notes that the Department for Education reported that EHC plan applications continued to rise, with 138,000 requests submitted in the last year, marking an almost 21% increase from 2022.

This surge underscores the pressing need for a full complement of support staff in schools to address diverse student needs effectively.

Benefits of a Full Educational Team

Personalised learning:

Teaching assistants and learning support assistants provide essential one-on-one or small group support, allowing for tailored learning experiences that meet individual student needs.

Specialised expertise:

Subject specialists and SENCOs bring in-depth knowledge and strategies to support students with specific learning requirements, ensuring that all learners have access to quality education.

Enhanced mental health support:

A well-rounded team can better identify and address mental health concerns, creating a supportive environment that promotes emotional wellbeing. Research indicates that one-to-one counselling may improve school attendance among persistently absent pupils, particularly at younger ages, by enhancing mental health and pupil engagement.

Continuity of learning:

High-quality supply teachers ensure that learning progresses seamlessly in the absence of regular staff, maintaining stability and consistency for students.

Impact on mental health

The presence of a full team of educational professionals positively influences students' mental health. When students receive the support they need, they are more likely to feel understood and valued, reducing anxiety and improving overall wellbeing. Support staff can implement interventions and provide the necessary attention to students facing mental health challenges, fostering a nurturing learning environment.

Ensuring safer internet usage

In the digital age, safeguarding students online is a critical responsibility. A comprehensive support team can effectively monitor and guide students' internet usage, teaching safe practices and promptly addressing any concerns. This collective vigilance helps in creating a secure digital learning space, promoting responsible online behaviour among students. Championing inclusivity in schools is a collective effort that hinges on the collaboration of a full team of educational professionals. As the demand for individualised support continues to rise, investing in a diverse and skilled support staff is essential. Such investment not only enhances academic outcomes but also contributes significantly to the mental health and overall wellbeing of students, preparing them for a successful future in an inclusive society.
